Texas Instruments TI-81 Graphing Calculator Review

Actually, at first I was a hesitate to buy the ti-81. Finally, I had made the decision to buy it. I find that it's worth every penny. I love it. Trust me, this calculator can do almost everything like the ti-83, except that it doesn't have as much memory as the ti-83 and the ability to transfer info. However, I find that the ti-81 is every easy to use. Not bad at all!!

Back in the late 80's, this was Casio's top-of-the-line calculator.
Since then, Casio has gone on to pursue higher margin calculators, with more and more features, meanwhile they keep stamping these guys out under various brand names.
However, cramming these features onto your calculator will more than likely do you more harm harm than good, especially as most college classes and textbooks are not geared towards programmable calculators, so many people actually (myself included) prefer the simplicity of the calculators of this era in order just to focus on the problem at hand.
This model uses 2xAA batteries (very easy to get) and should last you basically forever.
Unlike solar powered calculators, this one will give you the answer to the toughest problems, like 69! (factorial) absolutely instantly. That slight delay can can cause you to lose focus more than you realize--until you don't have it.
By the way, V.P.A.M. stands for Visually Perfect Algebraic Method.
For some reason, I have always preferred the layout of this calculator to that of similar TI models, although that is a matter of taste.

Canon F710 Dual-Line Scientific Calculator Review

Canon F710 Dual-Line Scientific Calculator

This calculator($6.99) is:
1) Cheap
2) Power packed(3 mem variables, preset formulas)
3) Durable(cover is hard and does not have easy-to-break edges - very easy to slide)
4) Clear(large two line lcd display for a scientific calculator of this price, color-coded buttons to find the needed buttons more quickly)
5) Relatively attractive(silver finish and glossy top that surrounds the display)
I like this calculator so far since it cost me mere pocket change. Since I am a high school calculus student, I am not allowed to use a graphing calculator on any test. However, I am able to use scientific calculators. This scientific calculator, unlike many other generics, have certain features desirable for a student of mathematics. If you are out of school already, I would just use either software on the computer or one of the high quality graphing calculators.

HP 33S Scientific Calculator (F2216A) Review

HP 33S Scientific Calculator (F2216A)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There has long been a real need for a high-quality scientific calculator for serious scientific and engineering professional, so I was glad to see HP back in the market with the HP-33S, a replacement for their popular HP-32SII (of which I own three!). With some caveats (see below), I've found this to be a very good scientific calculator, and probably the best one being manufactured today. I guess HP finally noticed that people are willing to pay over $300 for a used HP-32SII, and took the hint.
First, some general comments. I judged the overall quality of the calculator to be quite good. The keys have a good solid feel, like traditional HP calculators. It has about 80 times the memory of the HP-32SII, and I found it to run about 2.5 times faster. The manual is excellent -- clear and very well written, and similar to the HP-32SII manual.
The HP-33S has a few new features that weren't on the HP-32SII:
- Both RPN and algebraic entry modes. (The default is RPN.) I use RPN exclusively myself.
- Several new functions: cube, cube root, integer divide, remainder, greatest integer, and signum.
- A menu with 40 built-in physical constants (speed of light, electron charge, etc.). This is a great feature; I was constantly having to look up physical constants and store them in registers; now the constants are built in.
- A feature to shift the exponent of a number in engineering mode by factors of 1000.
- Four-way cursor keys (as you would find on a PDA or graphing calculator).
- Two-line display (to show both the X and Y registers).
The HP-33S does have a couple of drawbacks:
- Most importantly, as others have noted, the decimal point (and comma) are WAY too small. The decimal point can be difficult to see, especially when it comes after a digit 2.
- The rather bizarre V-shaped keyboard is a bit strange, but not really a problem. It just tends to give the keyboard a bit of a cluttered look. I'd rather see a traditional HP rectangular layout with blue and gold function keys on a dark background.
If you are a science or engineering professional or serious student, I would recommend this calculator as the best one being made today. Hopefully HP will come out with an HP-33SII that corrects the design problems -- then they'll have a five-star calculator.

HP 35s Scientific Calculator Review

HP 35s Scientific Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a diehard RPN and HP calculator fan. I bought this calculator for the PE exam. HP calculators I've owned include HP41c, HP42s, HP12c, HP17BII, HP19BII, and HP33s. The HP35s is basically an HP33s with most the ergonomic design flaws and quality issues of the HP33s fixed, along with a few added enhancements. It's what the HP33s should have been in the first place. But, along the way, it also introduces a few design flaws of its own.
Obvious pluses: The keys on the HP35s feel almost like the ultra high quality keys on the HP41c, not entirely there because the ones on the HP35s are flatter and have less travel distance, but very close. However, unlike those on the HP41c, some of the secondary colors on the keys are only painted on. How long would the paints last? It comes with a super nice semi-rigid vinyl case. The LCD display is fragile, but it seems to be dust-proof and has excellent contrast. The built-in metric/imperial conversions and constants library are also nice. One major enhancement over the HP33s is the ability for a program to refer to a line number instead of a label name during conditional branching. This feature allows the writing of programs that don't use up a lot of the precious program labels. The equation solver is quite powerful. It comes with built-in equations for solving 2x2 or 3x3 simultaneous equations.
Obvious minuses:
There are only 26 single alphabet program labels and only 26 variables, severely limiting the number of programs one can store, considering the somewhat large 30kB memory available(the HP42s only has 8kB). The manual has a good number of useful programs, but in reality one can store only a few of these programs on the calculator at a time due to the 26 program label limit. I can store more programs on the HP42s even though it only has 8kB of memory. In actual use, most of the 30kB on the HP35s will go untapped.
It's a shame HP chose not to include multi-letter alpha-numeric capability as they did on the HP41c and HP42s. Instead of labeling a program that calculates the time value of money using a single letter such as "T", I'd much rather be calling the program "TVM" or "MONEY" or something easy to remember. The same one-letter restriction applies also to variable names. The listed battery life is on the short side. Two hours of use per day will last the batteries only about 9 months.
Whereas the HP42s offers four types of curve-fitting and has capability to choose one with the best fit, the HP35s offers only linear regression. Also, unlike the HP42s, the HP35s doesn't have any built-in matrix capability to evaluate determinants, inverses, although it does have built-in 2x2 or 3x3 simultaneous equation solving ability as mentioned earlier. You can program all these missing capabilities in but you'll use up many of the precious 26 program labels in a hurry.
The STO key which I use very often is now subordinated, requiring a shift key, whereas the "Mode" key which I seldom use is primary.
The display has much more glare than other HP models I've owned.
Although I will almost never use the algebraic mode except when writing equations, I must mention that its implementation on the HP35s is clumsy. On other algebraic calculators I grew up with, the number precedes a function key (such as COS, 1/x, log) and the function is executed as soon as the function key is pressed. In other words, even though they are algebraic calculators, their function keys work in postfix or RPN mode.
The key sequence is
45
COS
The value of 0.707 is displayed as soon as the COS key is pressed. It's very simple and intuitive. This is also how the functions work on the HP33s. But, surprise, this ain't how it works on the HP35s!
On the HP35s, you have to start by first pressing the function key and then punch in the number and then press the Enter key to get the value.
The key sequence is
COS
45
ENTER
The ENTER key works as the equal sign key in algebraic mode on the HP35s. Hitting the ENTER key now becomes mandatory to get an answer from just about any operation. Although this peculiar algebraic approach may make sense when writing equations, it's highly cumbersome when doing calculations on the fly, especially for someone used to the keystroke efficiency of RPN.
I sometimes scratch my head trying to figure out why for the last 10-15 years HP kept churning out mediocre calculators, with each new one worse than the previous one. Why mess with winning designs and dumb them down to the level of TIs and Casios? Yes, the money is where the masses are and the masses are the high school and college crowd and they use predominantly TIs and Casios. Then it dawned on me that the sales execs, designers, programmers, engineers also have to somehow justify their existence by rolling out new models and discontinuing older but superior models. The HP35s seems to be a step to halt the march toward mediocrity. Does it succeed? Yes, mostly. Although the build quality is good, it certainly could have been designed better.
Even though the STO key is now subordinated, the HP35s fills the need for basic everyday number crunching due to its ergonomic form factor and ease of use combined with a reasonably rich set of functions. The HP50g fills the need for heavyduty scientific/engineering use but is too clumsy for everyday basic number crunching.
I'm sure as I use this calculator more, I will see more of both the pluses and minuses. And, if I were to rate this calculator in comparison with any Casio or any TI, I would give it 10 stars if I could. But I rate it in relation to what I expect an HP calculator should be and so I rate it 4 stars. If the HP35s came with more program labels and variables than just 26 of each (A to Z), multi-letter alpha-numeric data entry capability, matrix capability up to [5x5], 4 types of curve fits and best of fit, primary STO and RCL keys, I would rate it 5 stars.

Have used Casio scientific calculators throughout my life. I've had my 115MS for some three years now. I use it for electronics design and I've been constantly amazed at how every special function I ever need is there. Binary/hex/decimal conversions, engineering conversions including metric prefixes (kilo, micro, nano, pico etc. which I find simply indispensable), complex numbers, etc. The CALC function is particularly useful when I want to see how different values will alter the answer to a formula/equation.
One thing that peeves me though is that it takes three keystrokes to store a value in memory (variables). That's cumbersome.
Overall this inexpensive calculator gets a three thumbs up from me. If Casio makes an exact model with added programmability, I think it just might be the perfect calculator for me.

I wanted a small, pocket-sized scientific calculator like the Casio I previously had but that got smashed when I dropped it one day. Casio FX-300MS Plus 229-Function Scientific Calculator Review

I used to own a TI-36 made by Texas Instruments. That was a nice calculator, but then I decided to upgrade to this calculator.
There are many differences that set this calculator apart from the TI-36.
First of all, I love the 2 line display that displays the equation or whatever you just typed in on the top line and the answer on the bottom. Makes a perfect alternative to a graphing calculator that is very similar by displaying whatever you originally typed in. The TI-36 did not offer this. THis is a big plus.
Also, whenever you need to indicate a negative value, you can either use the negative button or the minus button before the value... for example, if you wanted to enter -5, you just have to key in - 5. With a TI calculator, you have to key in the five first, and then the negative sign. The TI way used to cause me to make some errors, but the Casio way is very logical!
Finally, you can use this calculator in any lighting condition. Because of three way power, you can use the solar panel in bright conditions and battery power in dark conditions, all automatically without any user interference!
There are tons of calculations that you can do with this calculator.
Although this calculator may seem a little expensive for a scientific calculator, I highly recommend it! It is definitely worth the money!

I bought this calculator's distant ancestor six or seven years ago in College and loved it ever since. The old model was the first calc that gave you graphing calculator editing capabilities in a small calc package and it was a steal for the $12 or $14 I paid for it then. This new generation is nothing short of a quantum leap forward. For the first time you can enter equations exactly as you would write them. The font switches to a smaller size, so you can review the whole equation at once. It also has a solver funtion that is intuitive and quick; I used it all the time on open channel flow problems, or any equation that would require more than mild rearranging of terms. This may be the only calc on the PE approved list that has this ability.
Other high points:
* excellent battery life and solar ability
* Table function
Minor quibbles:
* you may have to slow down the pace when keying in as it will miss keystrokes if you type too fast
* you have to hit Shift to get to 'X' (alpha) or Pi
* when editing an equation, very slow to cursor to where you want
