Texas Instruments TI-30XIIB Scientific Calculator Review

Texas Instruments TI-30XIIB Scientific Calculator
Average Reviews:

I bought this calculator b/c the National Board in Examiners of Optometry (NBEO) only allow Texas Instruments 30-series calculators on their exam. It's a good calculator and does just about anything you need it to for practical uses. I don't want to be rude, but the previous reviewers weren't "on the ball" on this one. If you want a solar model, buy one. This exact calculator is available in both battery and solar power. Your fault. To find square roots of a previously entered number, use the "Ans" key and close the parentheses inside the root bar. For basic exponents, use the "^" key. Don't blame the manufacturer for your incompetance.
Overall, don't listen to the previous 2 reviewers, and buy this calculator for use with any major exam (it will likely be one of the few permissible anyway).

Canon(R) P170-DH Printing Calculator Review

Canon(R) P170-DH Printing Calculator

Canon P170-DH is a business adding machine with a luminescent display with bright blue digits. I bought it for the display, because it is easier to read than a regular LCD display with black digits with no lighting. This is not a scientfic calculator as described at some websites. P170-DH is a non-scientific business machine with add, subtract, multiply, divide, subtotal, grand total, cost-sell-margin, and percentages. It also does time-of-day subtraction to calculate hours worked, making it the only adding machine in this price range with that feature. The red-black-ribbon printer works fine, but it is not as fast as more expensive adding machines. All adding machines have the same buttons, so I suspect the printer speed is what determines the price. I hope you already know how to use an adding machine (not like a calculator); otherwise the one-sheet instruction paper will not be very helpful. Looking for more help, I downloaded the instructions for similar adding machines from Sharp and Casio. Turns out it is the very same single sheet of instructions. Apparently Canon, Casio, Sharp, all use the same internals for their adding machine, and they drop in the same instruction sheet.

Sharp EL-506VB DAL Series Twin-Powered Scientific Calculator Review

Sharp EL-506VB DAL Series Twin-Powered Scientific Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
All through high school, I used a TI-86 graphing calculator. Unfortunately, once I got to college I found out that Chemistry professors are none-too-fond of programmable calculators, so I had to buy a new one. After some deliberation between another TI, a Casio and this Sharp, I finally decided on the Sharp. Needless to say from my review, I'm glad I did. Here's why:
College is tough on equipment, so high build quality of a calculator is a must. I'm used to a TI-86 (which is built like a tank), so the extremely light EL-506v is quite a change. However, the build appears plenty solid. The calculator is gray on the front, with a dark blue back and a dark blue translucent cover which snaps on nicely. The buttons are translucent as well, with the number and main function keys dark blue and the secondary keys white (the on key is also pink, and the secondary function key is yellow). There are slightly fewer keys than on TI's comperable model, but every button has several contextual functions. The display is quite nice. There are two lines, a large numerical one where data is input (with a small section dedicated to exponential notation) and a smaller one on top which shows you the entire equation you're working on. The screen has great contrast, and is large enough to be easily read. The keys have little travel and feel slightly floaty, but nothing that would suggest cheapness.
The EL-506v claims to posess 330 functions, and I believe it. I count 37 keys (besides the d-pad, which allows you to edit your current equation or cycle through old ones), and all posess a 2nd-key function and most have a third contextual function. There are all the things one would expect from a scientific calculator, and some you wouldn't. Most notable are a whole series of 44 unit conversions (technically; though half are simply the same conversion the other direction). Everything's there: mass, volume, area and more. There's also 40 physical constants. Both of these abilities are accessed through pushing a key and entering a reference number for the conversion/constant you want; the ref. numbers are printed on a two-sided card held in the calc's slide cover. I'm very pleased with the abilities of this calc, many of which I thought were confined to the realm of graphing units. Also, one last interesting ability is the so-called "advanced DAL" (Direct Algebraic Logic) input method, which allows you to type in equations just as they appear in textbooks. This makes things much simpler, since you needn't learn all types of esoteric entry methods for complex equations.
So, the lesson is this: if you need a convenient, small, thorough pocket scientific calculator, pick up one of these. You won't likely regret it.

Sharp's advanced D.A.L. series scientific calculator is ideal for students and professionals. Use its Direct Algebraic Logic system to enter the elements of an expression in the exact order they appear in the textbook. The extra-large 10-digit, two-line display (one line for equations and one for numbers) is easy to read. Plus, after getting an answer, you can use the multi-line "Playback" mode to play back the expressions and substitute new numeric values. Additional features include differential and integral calculus functions and 330 other advanced functions. The 506VB comes with a hard case.

Kenko Scientific Calculator fx-82LB Review

Kenko Scientific Calculator fx-82LB

Back in the late 80's, this was Casio's top-of-the-line calculator.
Since then, Casio has gone on to pursue higher margin calculators, with more and more features, meanwhile they keep stamping these guys out under various brand names.
However, cramming these features onto your calculator will more than likely do you more harm harm than good, especially as most college classes and textbooks are not geared towards programmable calculators, so many people actually (myself included) prefer the simplicity of the calculators of this era in order just to focus on the problem at hand.
This model uses 2xAA batteries (very easy to get) and should last you basically forever.
Unlike solar powered calculators, this one will give you the answer to the toughest problems, like 69! (factorial) absolutely instantly. That slight delay can can cause you to lose focus more than you realize--until you don't have it.
By the way, V.P.A.M. stands for Visually Perfect Algebraic Method.
For some reason, I have always preferred the layout of this calculator to that of similar TI models, although that is a matter of taste.

Canon F710 Dual-Line Scientific Calculator Review

Canon F710 Dual-Line Scientific Calculator
Average Reviews:

This calculator($6.99) is:
1) Cheap
2) Power packed(3 mem variables, preset formulas)
3) Durable(cover is hard and does not have easy-to-break edges - very easy to slide)
4) Clear(large two line lcd display for a scientific calculator of this price, color-coded buttons to find the needed buttons more quickly)
5) Relatively attractive(silver finish and glossy top that surrounds the display)
I like this calculator so far since it cost me mere pocket change. Since I am a high school calculus student, I am not allowed to use a graphing calculator on any test. However, I am able to use scientific calculators. This scientific calculator, unlike many other generics, have certain features desirable for a student of mathematics. If you are out of school already, I would just use either software on the computer or one of the high quality graphing calculators.

Texas Instruments TI34II Calculator Review

The TI-34II is a good calculator that is easy to use.
Unfortunately, it has one fatal flaw. While it allows numbers to be entered in scientific notation, it doesn't have a feature to show the result of a calulation in scientific notation. With a 10 digit display, it can be hard to figure out if 100000000 is 1 billion or 100 million. Lack of comma's to group digits into 3's also hurts. I ended up buying a CASIO FX-115MS, which does have the scientific notation and comma's.
If the TI had the comma's and scientific notation, it would beat the CASIO hands down for ease of use, and also contruction. I also like the fact that it remembers prior calculations even after auto-powering down. The CASIO forgets after any power down.

As a CPA an adding machine is like an extension of my right hand at times. No matter how computerized things get I'll always want my trusty little adding machine. Since I found this little Canon about 5 years ago I've changed jobs a couple times, and every time I HAD to order this exact machine because of its ease of use and attractiveness. (I finally bought one with my own $$ for my current position so that I can take it with me if/when I move on to something new.) It has a nice silver color with a black "cover" over the blue numbers on the display. It has a clock and calendar option. It prints black positive numbers and red negative numbers.
If you get one of these, make sure you open up the top and take the tape off the ribbon. It's like scotch tape (or something similar) put on there for shipping. If you don't take it off, you'll think the machine is out of ink during the first week or two because the ribbon won't be moving.

I'm a research scientist. I started using a slide rule in high school about 1947, a computer in 1958, and scientific calculators some time in the early 1970s. Despite the power of computers I still like to have ready access to a good calculator, and my favorite brand (for versatility and ease of use) is Texas Instruments. The TI36X especially impresses me. It is a very powerful, very user-friendly scientific calculator for less than [price]. It performs virtually all scientific functions plus basic statistics and linear regressions and is light-powered in virtually any light. In my view, this is an incredible bargain. In fact, although I already have Texas Instruments calculators in my bedroom, den, living room, and at work, I couldn't resist the TI36X and bought one. It's a terrific calculator! If you don't need graphing capability, I highly recommend this powerful bargain calculator.

Ideal for students at every level, from junior high school algebra to college calculus, the Texas Instruments TI36 packs a lot of punch in a small, inexpensive unit. This solar-powered calculator combines features for statistical analysis, Boolean logic operations, and unit conversions in one sleek package.
Math students will appreciate TI36X's ability to perform fractional equations and calculate angle units (radians, grads, degrees) when performing trigonometric functions. Everyone will find the calculator's English/metric conversions helpful.
The TI36Xs single-line LCD is a little difficult to read when the unit is lying on a desk, and users in need of graphing functions will have to look elsewhere. Overall, however, for a calculator in this price range, the TI36X provides enough power for most high-level math and science needs.

This Sharp EL-1750P is a pretty great printing calculator for the price. I needed one for my new job and didn't want to spend a lot, so this is what I got. The only thing that I didn't like about this calculator is that to subract one number from another, you have to press the number, then the plus sign, then the other number, then the minus sign. I don't know if this is how all of these types of calculators are or not, since this is the only one like this that I have ever used... but pressing the addition symbol to subract seemed a little weird to me. I am used to it now, but I tend to get frustrated using a regular calculator at home that actually adds everything when you hit the addition sign! Other than that, I am satisfied with the 18.99 I spent on it.

Sharp EL-506WBBK Scientific Calculator Review

Sharp EL-506WBBK Scientific Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sharp has created the first serious mathematical tool for under $30. Note this is a greatly expanded version of the EL-506VB with a $5 price break thrown in for good measure.
Here are the things it CAN'T do:
1) Graphing
2) Programming (you can program formulas, but no conditional branching)
3) Symbolic Computer Algebra
4) Chi Squared distribution (it will do normal probabilities)
5) Huge matrices (you're limited to four 4x4 matrices)
6) THAT'S ABOUT IT!
Guess what? All those things are best done on a computer anyway. You can get a free copy of MuPad (for noncommercial use), and have far better functionality than any calculator at any price, plus get your output in a form easily shared over the internet. What Sharp has done with this calculator, is give us the ultimate tool to keep NEXT to your computer, or take with you for "outside the box" mathematical doodling.
440 functions (it says 469 on the box -- I'm not counting!) and all easily accessible without menus within menus within menus, ala those cludgy graphing calculators. Oh, there are a few modes and such, but believe me, everything is within a few logical keystrokes. You can spend 30 minutes with the manual, and then THROW IT AWAY.
They did so many little things right. For example, when you do need a menu, you can scroll through all the options with the cursor keys, OR, if you already know your way around, you can just hit one digit that corresponds to your function. And insert mode is the default mode, as God intended it to be. THANK YOU SHARP! The principle is simple: the default should be to preserve information, not destroy it. The user should have to do something deliberately, to overwrite data.
And they took this design out of the world of "toy" and into the realm of "tool" by keeping the calculation history intact through the on/off cycle. If the calculator shuts off in the middle of some earth shaking computation, you just flip it back on again and keep going where you left off.
The keys actually have a little tactile feedback on this calculator. Not like an hp-48, of course, or even a TI-89, but better than most under $30 calculators. And this is just the koolest LOOKING little thing to ever dazzle your eyeballs.
Here's a partial list of function types:
- Arithmetic
- Numeric differentiation/integration
- Four types of random numbers
- 8 memories plus last Answer memory
- 4 formula memories
- Fraction calculations
- Binary, Pental, Octal, Decimal and Hexadecimal base conversions
- Decimal to sexagesimal (time) conversions
- 52 physical constants
- 42 metric conversion
- Engineering notation
- Solve for x (Newton's method)
- Single variable statistics, with normal probabilities
- Linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, power and inverse regressions
- Simultaneous linear equations
- Quadratic and cubic equation solvers
- Complex number calculations
- Matrices (four 4x4)
- Lists (up to four with 16 elements and various operations)
No doubt about it, this is a ground breaking, price shattering tool. I do have one little nit, though. I wish numbers would appear in the top line with the rest of the formula as you enter them. Putting them on the bottom line does two things: 1) It erases the results of the previous calculation (you might want to copy parts of it into the current formula while "doodling"). 2) It removes the numbers from all editing functions, except for last digit DEL. Eg. You can't use the arrow keys to go back and insert a missed digit without some unnecessary tomfoolery.
Oh, and it would be nice to have more memory, so you could input slightly larger matrices (10x10 would be nice), and keep a longer calculation history (maybe keep results as well as formulas?). But all in all, hats off to Sharp. Right now, this is the ONLY serious calculator under $30.

HP SmartCalc 300s Scientific Calculator (F2240AA) Review

HP SmartCalc 300s Scientific Calculator (F2240AA)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Second Caution and Possible Cause?- July 9, 2009:
From the ways the missing keystrokes that I described below behave, it is probably not a direct keying problem, but rather a CPU "thinking-timing" issue. It is still a real and troublesome issue, but I am finding it harder to believe that it is a simple mechanical failure such that any key will not properly register more than ~90% of the time. In any event, please check with an HP technician is my advice before purchasing this otherwise quite nice, but also quite simplistic machine.
CAUTION ADVISED: June 3, 2009 (New rating-1.5 stars)
After further detailed testing of the most basic function of this machine, namely adding a series of numbers in sequence in COMP mode, I have found that ~10-15 % of the time that this machine had missed keystrokes (regardless of how fast the keys are typed in unfortunately and this can also happen for any key on the keyboard- it is not key specific at all!). I have also tried 2 separate HP 300s units in my testing as well so it is not a single machine problem either. I also tried removing the battery for 24 hrs to let the units capacitor fully discharge and then I completely reset the machine, but with no improvement in this COMP mode problem at all.
I also found this problem (but not as severe) when entering a series of data points in STAT mode. I have now contacted HP directly and told them about the problem and they are looking into what may be wrong with the early productions of this unit.
The serial numbers of my HP 300s calculators are:
4CR 91602514 and 4CR 91602534
May 29, 2009 Comments (Rating- 4 stars):
It is very ironic that for many years people have complained that HP calculators have been way too complicated. In this case, in comparison to the two main competitors to this model by Sharp (EL-W516B) and Casio (FX-115ES) the reverse is actually the case. On the HP Smartcalc 300s, you will NOT find:
1) Numerical evaluation of integrals or derivatives
2) Imaginary (complex) number mathematics
3) Vectors, lists or matrices
4) No single variable solver (ironically this has been HP's standout trademark of success for many years)
5) Scientific unit conversions
6) Lists of scientific constants
7) Linear equation system solver, etc.
On the other hand the new bright blue and quite sleek HP 300s model (which was designed as a high school level machine and which strongly resembles the HP 10s machine previously introduced for middle school students) does evaluate the logarithm to any base and allows a recalculation of 8 types of curve fits of statistical data which can also include the frequency of occurrence of any of the 1 or 2 variable entry types (in STAT mode) without reentering the data completely over again (as must be done on the Sharp and Casio models, presumably due to memory limitations). For paired statistics you are limited on the HP 300s to only 40 (x,y) data points however, compared to 100 points for the Sharp for example. It also has a very fine and fully editable, multi-line screen (with a maximum of 3 lines) that is effectively managed using a separate, 4 key navigation pad. With this added tool, a very useful fully scrollable display of equations is available as they would be written on paper algebraically as well as a history of operations (it is a limited buffer however and when it becomes full it simply throws away the oldest entry with no warning to the user) that can be recalled for backtracking numerous past operations. As with the other two competitive calculator products mentioned above, results can be displayed in either algebraic or in decimal format with a single key press and can also be readily converted to hours, minutes and seconds format with a separate single key press as well.

The new HP is a solar powered calculator with a very nice and completely adjustable contrast control available in the set-up (as on the competitor's models) with an AOS (algebraic operating system with up to 24 levels of pending parentheses, but with no Reverse Polish Notation operations- RPN or even any RPL- Reverse Polish Logic) and with a long lasting internal back-up battery (and which is very easy to change when needed after 1-2 years of heavy use). It is also a very clean, light and small pocket sized unit (with a very nicely fitting slip-on plastic, protective cover) with a very uncluttered keyboard that also does polar and rectangular conversions and that can also generate random numbers and also (in TABLE mode) can produce a table of up to 30 values (in STAT format) of functional values, etc. It also has a claimed total of 249 available functions (compared to ~400-460 on the Casio and Sharp models) with 8 separate memories (the M memory is also retained when the machine is turned off, just like on the Sharp). I personally prefer the "feel" of the keys much better on the HP compared to those on the Sharp and Casio models as well with the latter keys being too easy to push (soft) in my opinion.
In summary this is a good machine that has a lot to like, but it is surprising that HP, who has provided a powerhouse of mathematics innovation over the years, both to NASA as well as to the public, has not made a more complex and more scientifically useful model overall. It has all of the fundamental and traditional scientific functions available (trigonometric, hyperbolic, factorial, powers, roots, etc.) on most scientific calculators, but lacks many useful more complex functions now available on the competitive models from other companies. What it does however it does well and for beginning students this machine may even be less of a struggle for learning mathematics (due to fewer bells and whistles and an uncluttered keyboard as stated earlier!). Sharp has covered the scientific calculator market by producing several machines each with a different level of scientific difficulty. Maybe this is the approach HP will now try too if this machine becomes as popular as its Sharp and Casio competitors?

TI-30x IIS calculators stinnk. The keys don't always get the numbers you press in and its really irritating. Makes homework go 2x as long as it has too.

I recently got this exact calculator as I started up my Electronics college course. It's been nothing but amazing for me. Viewing multiple problems and answers at a time is good, but browsing your entire history with the arrow pad is great.
It intuitive too. While brosing through my previous entries, I found a few different answers that I wanted to plug in together and get the sum. I browsed my way up to one, and on a guess, hit ENTER. It placed that number in my new problem at the bottom. Okay, lets see if it will do it again... I hit PLUS, then browsed up and got another old answer. It not only remembered what I'd input so far on the new problem, but put my next selection exactly where I hoped! All this is probably in the manual, but this is so well designed, there are many cases like this example where things just work out the way I think they should.
One negative on this calculator is the CLEAR button and the DELETE button. I'm glad they spaced them apart, but they put the CLEAR button where I would think they'd put DELETE. And vice versa. I've looked at other Texas Instrument calculators, and this seems to be the convention... maybe it's just me.
I appreciate their use of the button "x10^n" instead of the "EE" button. I had no idea what EE would be without finding it in the manual, but I knew right away what to expect when I hit x10^n.
Lastly, this calculator's design and wording have been a great stepping stone for me, to get past the gap between dinky little arithmatic calculators and heavy-duty graphing calculators.
Highly recommended. Incredible buy.
