Canon(R) P170-DH Printing Calculator Review

(More customer reviews)Canon P170-DH is a business adding machine with a luminescent display with bright blue digits. I bought it for the display, because it is easier to read than a regular LCD display with black digits with no lighting. This is not a scientfic calculator as described at some websites. P170-DH is a non-scientific business machine with add, subtract, multiply, divide, subtotal, grand total, cost-sell-margin, and percentages. It also does time-of-day subtraction to calculate hours worked, making it the only adding machine in this price range with that feature. The red-black-ribbon printer works fine, but it is not as fast as more expensive adding machines. All adding machines have the same buttons, so I suspect the printer speed is what determines the price. I hope you already know how to use an adding machine (not like a calculator); otherwise the one-sheet instruction paper will not be very helpful. Looking for more help, I downloaded the instructions for similar adding machines from Sharp and Casio. Turns out it is the very same single sheet of instructions. Apparently Canon, Casio, Sharp, all use the same internals for their adding machine, and they drop in the same instruction sheet.

However, I was very disappointed to open the package and discover a generic brand was sent to me. I have not had good luck in the past with generic calculator ribbons which is the reason I spent extra time trying to find the Nu-kote brand. I feel completely mislead and dissatisfied with the transaction as well as the product.

(More customer reviews)This Sharp EL-1750P is a pretty great printing calculator for the price. I needed one for my new job and didn't want to spend a lot, so this is what I got. The only thing that I didn't like about this calculator is that to subract one number from another, you have to press the number, then the plus sign, then the other number, then the minus sign. I don't know if this is how all of these types of calculators are or not, since this is the only one like this that I have ever used... but pressing the addition symbol to subract seemed a little weird to me. I am used to it now, but I tend to get frustrated using a regular calculator at home that actually adds everything when you hit the addition sign! Other than that, I am satisfied with the 18.99 I spent on it.

(More customer reviews)When you're hesitant to go to the expense of a cash register, this is a great calculator for a small retail business - which is exactly why I purchased it. The keys are large, paper roll insertion is easy and the automatic tax calculation key (TAX+) for sales is helpful. The Casio website is also helpful for tech support. I purchased this item used without a manual and needed to know how to set the tax rate. (It was preset to 5% and I needed to change it to 6.5%.) Within a day they emailed me back with step-by-step instructions. If you are also struggling to figure this out and can't find the info on the web (as I couldn't) here are the steps as they provided to me:
1. Set calculator to "print."
2. Press CA.
3. Press SET key for about 3 seconds.
4. Enter tax rate.
5. Press TAX+.
6. Press SET.
By the way, the SET key is the percent key.

Casio DR-210 12 Digit Ink Ribbon Desktop DP Calculator Review

Quiet, comfortable key touch, well placed key positions. Digital display bright and a good size. Easy paper load. Attractive. Nice conversion feature.
Paper on outside might cause problems on crowded or dirty desk areas.
We got our models for $50 at Office Max.
BIG DESIGN FLAW:
The clear panel in front of the paper is placed too high in relation to the paper tape feed. When seated, the first printed number remains completely out of sight until one has typed in two more numbers. One would have to constantly use the "feed" button, stand up, or prop the machine up at a 45 degree angle to see each number typed!!
Casio needs to fix this.
Problem two: it has (as did all the printing models there) reel to reel ribbon holders to load instead of cassettes. These are identical to those found in vintage typewriters, only tinier. I really don't get this change. A cassette is so much easier to load than fiddling with two reels of inky tape. This is technology regression!
Lesson: make the store put in some paper so you can try the thing out just as you will use it.

(More customer reviews)I have now had this calculator for a year and don't have any complaints, keeping in mind that it is a small calculator, not a full-size one. I sometimes don't hit the keys correctly because they are fairly small, but that is the price for having a compact calculator, which is exactly what I needed. If you have the space for a full-size calculator and will be using it a lot, I would recommend getting something bigger. Otherwise, this is a very good choice. I use rechargeable NiMH AA batteries in it (it takes 4), and simply recharge them every 3-4 months or so as needed. I bought this to replace a very similar Casio which had given me about 15 years of good service until it stopped advancing the paper properly when printing. If this newer one gives me equally long service I will be very pleased.

The manual, however, is awful. It is in many languages. The print is small and what it says is not very informative. It does show samples. If you are used to this type of machine, it is probably adequate, but I'm not.
I have been able to use it, but I haven't had the patience to learn all the things it can do.
Also they only include a tiny roll of paper.

Much faster than the original which was fast enough but why complain?

I particularly like the size and the keypad has a nice feel (or touch) to it. I wanted something smaller, since I no longer have a home office. It has many "features", (although I will probably never use most of them) it's nice to know they are available. This product deserves a five star rating.

Casio HR-100TM 2-Color Printing Calculator Review

(More customer reviews)Many other reviewers have already made the point, I can only affirm it. For the price, it's a great calculator but the instructions are awful and very difficult to follow. I ended up spending $12 after the fact for replacement ink cartridges because not only are the directions/illustrations unclear about how to install the ink cartridge, but if one is not careful, the cartridge slips out of your fingers and easily becomes irretrievably lost inside the guts of the calculator. (I can hear it rattling around in there, but cannot get it out.) Be warned, local supply stores' listing of replacement cartridges will not have this model listed in their stores, so be sure to ask and make sure that you get the proper replacement cartridge (the HR 100 is NOT the same as the HR 100TM; I learned the hard way.)
