(More customer reviews)I just purchased this AWESOME ultracompact digital camera from my local camera store. I am by no means a novice to the world of digital photography. I bought my 1st digital camera (Nikon Coolpix 990) over 4 years ago for just under a thousand dollars. While it took great pictures, it was too bulky and a bit too easy to change the settings on the camera. My 2nd digital camera was a SONY Mavica-that one had TERRIBLE photo quality. My 3rd camera was the Canon S50 which is very highly rated butI had 3 problems with it- 1. It was too bulky to toss into my pocket. 2. The toggle switches are a pain to operate (they eliminated them for the S60/70) 3. I was not blown away by the photo quality. To be honest, I think my Nikon Coolpix took better indoor pictures and it only had 3 (vs 5) mega-pixels! I have heard that Nikon utilizes some of the best photo lenses in the industry which result in great-looking pictures. I was thinking about getting the Nikon Coolpix 3200 BUT the shutter speed is way too slow! And it has a cheap, plastic body. Then I read Mossberg's review of the Dimage X50 in the Wall Street Journal and was very intrigued. So, I headed to my local camera store and purchased it (they have a 7 day return/exchange policy). I took a bunch of pictures of my baby both indoors and out, and I was VERY IMPRESSED with the photo quality (for a camera this tiny)*.
UPDATE:
*Some reviewers complained about "noisy" pictures. You have to factor that in when considering a digital camera purchase. If you want pictures with no noise, then you have to use a much bigger camera like the Canon A95 or Sony W1. Also, I don;t recommend buying an ultracompact camera as your primary or sole camera. They are best for taking to parties or tossing them in your bag to capture spontaneous life moments. You shouldn't expect an ultacompact to produce museum quality pictures- it's simply not possible. I truly believe that the XS50 offers one of the best photo quality in the arena of ultracompacts.
Besides the high photo quality, there is A LOT I love about my 4th digital camera. 1st, the price is GREAT esp. when you consider the picture quality, TINY size, and zoom capability. I think it's a STEAL! 2nd, the only thing I disagree with Mossberg is that he didn't think it looked very "sleek". I love the all metal design - aside from the viewfinder, you will not find any cheap plastic parts. Even the A/V out has a tiny metal door that slides up and down. Not to be anti-American made but it's obvious that this was made in Japan. It is also extremely EASY to use-the buttons are very intuitive. I have yet to crack open the manual. It also makes a soothing "ding" sound when the picture is in focus (not at all loud or annoying) so that you are assured a great picture! Even though it is very small, the lay-out is great and NO TOGGLE SWITCHES. And of course, having a 2" LCD monitor is very helpful (and fun). You don't have to squint into a tiny viewfinder! The combined 12x zoom is VERY COOL-it's similsr to a submarine telescope and doesn't protude !
The only thing I'm not crazy about is that it uses a proprietary battery but it's supposed to last for over a 150 pictures and using "AA" batteries would have added too much bulk. Overall,
I am THRILLED with this camera! I finally got (almost) EVERYTHING I was looking for in an ultracompact digital camera- Very Good photo quality, ease of use, tiny size, and a very FAST SHUTTER SPEED at a great price. What more can you want? Well, maybe a bigger memory card :-)

(More customer reviews)I did a great deal of research before purchasing this camera because I don't have the time or money that some people apparently have to be doing the eBay revolving door thing. What I came to realize is that, disappointingly, there isn't a clearly superior compact or ultracompact camera out there. There are only cameras with greater or lesser compromises and the trick is finding the one you can live with. The Lumix TZ5 was a good travel companion and turned out to have few flaws.
Since it irritates me when people say that they do a great deal of research and then never share it (doesn't that irritate you?), here are some of the cameras I ruled out based on my (maybe not your) criteria:
Fujifilm FinePix F100fd (difficult menu design, pink banding issue), Canon PowerShot SD890 IS (reported awful handling and poorly designed controls), Casio Exilim Card EX-S10 (No image stabilization, very slim, picture quality ok, weak zoom, tiny controls), Casio Exilim EX-S880 (No image stabilization, reported poor image quality), Olympus Stylus 850 SW (reportedly poor video shooting, poor battery life), Pentax Optio V10 (No image stabilization), Casio EX-Z1080 (Reduced pixels compared to others, 38mm starting range), Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX55 (Reportedly falls short on image quality, no viewfinder, larger), Ricoh Caplio R7 (No optical viewfinder, very noisy, some barrel distortion when fully extended, poor customer service?, reported quality mediocre), Pentax Optio A40 (Reportedly poor autofocus), and Canon PowerShot A470 (No viewfinder, no image stabilization, weak zoom).
Unfortunately, doing all this research meant I didn't get the Lumix TZ5 till right before my trip to Amsterdam - I was literally reading the manual on the plane. I don't recommend this, but it does serve as a good crash test for what the camera could (and could not) do out-of-the-box.
As you probably know, this isn't an ultracompact but it is not as big as some reviewers make out. Could fit in a large pocket but it is rather heavy and unprotected in that environment so I got a LowePro case for it that sat on my belt. Worked well, allowed for extra batteries and SD card, and access was quick for candid shots.
Things that worked well:
* The Intelligent Auto mode worked pretty well for most situations. I suggest studying the exposure compensation settings since I had to use these often in high contrast and full sun situations.
* One handed operation works well.
* Menu system was pretty intuitive for basic functions.
* Zoom is amazing and E.Zoom setting was very useful. Be sure to read how to use the "extended optical zoom" which lets you go out to 16.9x at reduced picture quality (I believe you have to have picture quality set at max 9MB and this is then reduced to 3MB). I didn't use the digital zoom.
* The screen is gorgeous and the playback is amazing - many people commented on this.
* Taking video is pretty easy, though I would have preferred a button rather than having to rotate a dial. Be careful on playback to distinguish between what is a still picture and what is video - I accidentally deleted some video because I thought they were poor still shots, rather than the start of the video.
* If the dial is accidentally rotated, the camera will not let you take a picture until you correctly choose an actually setting.
* Fairly quick start up - not stellar but not bad.
* Can set up something called Travel Date, which will organize pictures by 1st, 2nd, 3rd day. This was useful when sharing pictures and to help you remember the chronology of the trip.
* You can zoom while taking video, although more slowly than with still shots.
What didn't work well:
* No matter what you read, the pretty LCD screen is no replacement for a view finder even when you use the Auto Power LCD option to compensate. In daylight, even on the brightest setting, the screen washes out. Another problem I had was I had to remove my glasses to compose on the screen, which was a hassle with rapidly-moving candid shots. This was the biggest disappointment and I took off one star for this.
* Certain functions of the camera will only work in certain settings. For example, you can only set the self-timer for 10 sec in IA mode, histograms cannot be displayed in IA mode, exposure settings can only be used in normal mode, extended optical zoom cannot be used in motion picture mode, etc. It can be frustrating, and you can miss a good shot, if you don't have all that memorized. I imagine all cameras are like this, but thought I would mention it since we are discussing an out-of-the-box experience.
* The door to the sockets on the right-hand side comes open easily (does not lock closed but only snaps shut), which is a hassle at times. I am concerned that it will snap off one day.
* In my opinion, the flash is underpowered.
Overall, I am happy with the TZ5 and impressed with the pictures and video it produced - especially since I had so little experience with it. My friend, who is a film maker by trade, was also impressed with the camera. It is bigger than I would have liked, but the trade off for a 10X zoom was worth it for me.
Do get an extra battery - I went through both batteries in 4 hours of shooting, mostly stills but some video. Big hassle to run out of juice in the middle of your day. A SD Extreme III 8GB was recommended in some reviews and it worked well for me, especially with shooting video. In doing research about buying a camera, one of the most helpful websites I found was the "What Camera Should I Buy?" forum at the Digital Camera Resource Page - [...]

The only thing that I didn't like about this calculator is that to subract one number from another, you have to press the number, then the plus sign, then the other number, then the minus sign. I don't know if this is how all of these types of calculators are or not, since this is the only one like this that I have ever used... but pressing the addition symbol to subract seemed a little weird to me. I am used to it now, but I tend to get frustrated using a regular calculator at home that actually adds everything when you hit the addition sign! Other than that, I am satisfied with the 18.99 I spent on it.

Comparing the two, this tripod lacks a handle, it feels less sturdy, less smooth panning, it is much shorter. it lacks decent locks on the adjustments, it lacks a weight hook. If you loosen the adjustments too much, they fall off. It is much flimsier, and shorter when extended, but yet it is no smaller when packed, and only 1 lb or so lighter. And so on and so forth ad-nauseum.
My opinion: Between the two at least, definitely don't wast your money on this one, spend another couple bucks and get a little better one, or don't bother getting one at all.

Casio DR-210 12 Digit Ink Ribbon Desktop DP Calculator Review

Quiet, comfortable key touch, well placed key positions. Digital display bright and a good size. Easy paper load. Attractive. Nice conversion feature.
Paper on outside might cause problems on crowded or dirty desk areas.
We got our models for $50 at Office Max.
BIG DESIGN FLAW:
The clear panel in front of the paper is placed too high in relation to the paper tape feed. When seated, the first printed number remains completely out of sight until one has typed in two more numbers. One would have to constantly use the "feed" button, stand up, or prop the machine up at a 45 degree angle to see each number typed!!
Casio needs to fix this.
Problem two: it has (as did all the printing models there) reel to reel ribbon holders to load instead of cassettes. These are identical to those found in vintage typewriters, only tinier. I really don't get this change. A cassette is so much easier to load than fiddling with two reels of inky tape. This is technology regression!
Lesson: make the store put in some paper so you can try the thing out just as you will use it.

Last week I sold my Canon S230 camera (similar to SD200), which served me well for about 3 years, and was looking for a replacement. The following criteria were most important to me: price, quality, and reliability. Also, I want to mention that I have some professional photography experience. I used to work for Kodak for a couple of years in Professional Digital Imaging department, doing some software testing. I don't consider myself to be a Pro, but I do know what I'm talking about when it comes to cameras, and digital cameras/photography in particular. Back to cameras - I didn't want to buy another Canon, because I think they are overrated and overpriced. I like Sony - I think their video equipment is one of the best on the market, but unfortunately the same doesn't apply to their digital cameras. So, using specific parameters/criteria I've narrowed down my search to a few brands/models: Kodak V530/V550, Panasonic FX8/FX9, and Casio S600/Z600/Z60 (I was also looking at Z750 and Z850). Kodak turned out to be a waste of my time - two days after I bought it, I took it back to Walmart (thanks to their great return policy - no restocking fees or anything else). After that I wasn't even going to try V550. Panasonic uses Leica lenses, and I wish I could try it, but unfortunately it is not sold anywhere locally, and I didn't want to buy it online, because if I didn't like and wanted to return it, I would end up paying restocking fees.
So, I went back to Walmart, and there it was, sitting on the shelf, Casio Exilim EX-Z60. Pretty in silver. I've read/heard a lot of good things about Casio digital cameras, but was always leery to try one myself, mainly because of the reliability fact. But since Walmart has such a nice return policy, I went ahead and bought it anyway. I was in for a treat - this camera turned out to be a truly pleasant surprise. I've been using it for a few days now and it just keeps on amazing me. In a few more days I will have to take it back to Walmart, but not because I don't like it, but because I bought myself a Z600 (it's coming in the mail), which I wouldn't have before I tried this one. In my review I will give you a full analysis of the Z60 model, and then I will tell you why I chose to go with the Z600, as well as I will compare it to S600, Z750, and Z850.
Pros:
Design - Simple, yet elegant. Very clean, modern look. Available in Silver, Black, and I believe also in Red. I am not sure what other colors look like, but silver looks really nice. It's brushed, not polished, which in my opinion is better, since it doesn't scratch as easily. Buttons seem to be in the right places. Overall, a very sexy looking camera.
Price - Comparing to other brands in the same range, it's on a low side. Walmart had it for just under $250. I think you can buy it cheaper online for about $220-230, which is a great deal for a 6MP digital camera of this caliber.
Picture Quality - Holy cow!!! Wow!!! Those were my first words when I took first few shots. I have not seen anything like this. It put my Canon to shame! Have you heard of an expression "Picture Perfect"?! This was certainly the case. The pictures looked bright, bold, and crisp. Ready to be published/printed in any magazine or to be placed in a frame and hanged on a wall. Simply brilliant! What I also liked is that how "true" the colors were, meaning that whatever was red in real life, appeared red in a picture - not pink, or orange, or any other color. Not many cameras are capable of that - most of them will "distort" the color somehow.
Features - For an ultra compact P&S digital camera, it is packed with various features. Menus, buttons all seem to be in the right places and are very easy to operate without previous knowledge. Large 2.5" LCD (display); 33 shooting modes (including EBay mode, where the pictures are specifically optimized for selling items on EBay - my wife was thrilled about that); Anti Shake DSP (stabilization control for those with shaky hands to minimize the blurriness in pictures); and many more. Great job, Casio!!!
Battery Life - I spent a full day before I had to recharge the battery. With this one, you will probably never need a backup battery.
Cons:
I simply cannot say that I don't like something in particular about this camera. Perhaps reliability is my biggest concern. Will this camera be "true" to me, just like Canon was for 3 years, or will it break after a couple of months - only time will show... but for now, I am a happy camper.
Summary:
Whichever one you choose, Z60 or Z600, any one will be a great choice! But it now!!!
Now that I've given you a somewhat full description/analysis of a Z60, I will have to say why I chose to go with a Z600 (which I will review as soon as I get my hands on it). But before I do that, I will also mention that I considered buying a Z750, Z850, and an S600. So, why didn't I? Well, I did my research first. Both Z750 and Z850 are not true P&S cameras - they are more for someone who wants a bit more of a manual control. From what I hear, they are great cameras, but unless you have some knowledge in professional photography, or want to learn more about it, it's not worth buying it. They also have a few problems that haven't been addressed yet by Casio, and they are also a bit pricy for an average consumer. S600 on the other hand is another true P&S camera, with some great features. For one, it takes movies (video) in MPEG-4 format, comparing to Z60 and Z600's AVI. How is it different? Because it's a better quality format, and you can also store of up to 5 times more. Not bad, ah?! It also looks way too cool. Casio even calls it a Card Camera - it looks and feels like a credit card, that's how compact it is. So, why didn't I buy an S600 then? Well, first of all it's more expensive than a Z600. But most importantly it lacks a few features (such as EBay mode for example), and also has only a 2.2" LCD, comparing to 2.5" on a Z60, and a huge bright 2.7" on a Z600. There you have it. The Z60 and Z600 are practically identical, except for the LCD size. Price difference was not very significant (Z600 probably $20 more), but I figured the larger display is well worth it. Also, Z600 is a bit smaller, and weighs a little less as well.
Once again, I am very impressed with Casio, and highly recommend it to everyone.

(More customer reviews)I just bought my 2nd Casio Exilim camera.The 6mp that I lost,did such nice job,I figured I couldn't go wrong with 10mp.I have not been disappointed.This camera does everything the competition does for less.The setup is easy and the pictures are nice and crisp.The size is perfect and the styling is attractive.The on/off button is kind of tricky for big hands and fingers.Overall this is an excellent camera and I would reccomend it to my friends.
