(More customer reviews)I did a great deal of research before purchasing this camera because I don't have the time or money that some people apparently have to be doing the eBay revolving door thing. What I came to realize is that, disappointingly, there isn't a clearly superior compact or ultracompact camera out there. There are only cameras with greater or lesser compromises and the trick is finding the one you can live with. The Lumix TZ5 was a good travel companion and turned out to have few flaws.
Since it irritates me when people say that they do a great deal of research and then never share it (doesn't that irritate you?), here are some of the cameras I ruled out based on my (maybe not your) criteria:
Fujifilm FinePix F100fd (difficult menu design, pink banding issue), Canon PowerShot SD890 IS (reported awful handling and poorly designed controls), Casio Exilim Card EX-S10 (No image stabilization, very slim, picture quality ok, weak zoom, tiny controls), Casio Exilim EX-S880 (No image stabilization, reported poor image quality), Olympus Stylus 850 SW (reportedly poor video shooting, poor battery life), Pentax Optio V10 (No image stabilization), Casio EX-Z1080 (Reduced pixels compared to others, 38mm starting range), Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX55 (Reportedly falls short on image quality, no viewfinder, larger), Ricoh Caplio R7 (No optical viewfinder, very noisy, some barrel distortion when fully extended, poor customer service?, reported quality mediocre), Pentax Optio A40 (Reportedly poor autofocus), and Canon PowerShot A470 (No viewfinder, no image stabilization, weak zoom).
Unfortunately, doing all this research meant I didn't get the Lumix TZ5 till right before my trip to Amsterdam - I was literally reading the manual on the plane. I don't recommend this, but it does serve as a good crash test for what the camera could (and could not) do out-of-the-box.
As you probably know, this isn't an ultracompact but it is not as big as some reviewers make out. Could fit in a large pocket but it is rather heavy and unprotected in that environment so I got a LowePro case for it that sat on my belt. Worked well, allowed for extra batteries and SD card, and access was quick for candid shots.
Things that worked well:
* The Intelligent Auto mode worked pretty well for most situations. I suggest studying the exposure compensation settings since I had to use these often in high contrast and full sun situations.
* One handed operation works well.
* Menu system was pretty intuitive for basic functions.
* Zoom is amazing and E.Zoom setting was very useful. Be sure to read how to use the "extended optical zoom" which lets you go out to 16.9x at reduced picture quality (I believe you have to have picture quality set at max 9MB and this is then reduced to 3MB). I didn't use the digital zoom.
* The screen is gorgeous and the playback is amazing - many people commented on this.
* Taking video is pretty easy, though I would have preferred a button rather than having to rotate a dial. Be careful on playback to distinguish between what is a still picture and what is video - I accidentally deleted some video because I thought they were poor still shots, rather than the start of the video.
* If the dial is accidentally rotated, the camera will not let you take a picture until you correctly choose an actually setting.
* Fairly quick start up - not stellar but not bad.
* Can set up something called Travel Date, which will organize pictures by 1st, 2nd, 3rd day. This was useful when sharing pictures and to help you remember the chronology of the trip.
* You can zoom while taking video, although more slowly than with still shots.
What didn't work well:
* No matter what you read, the pretty LCD screen is no replacement for a view finder even when you use the Auto Power LCD option to compensate. In daylight, even on the brightest setting, the screen washes out. Another problem I had was I had to remove my glasses to compose on the screen, which was a hassle with rapidly-moving candid shots. This was the biggest disappointment and I took off one star for this.
* Certain functions of the camera will only work in certain settings. For example, you can only set the self-timer for 10 sec in IA mode, histograms cannot be displayed in IA mode, exposure settings can only be used in normal mode, extended optical zoom cannot be used in motion picture mode, etc. It can be frustrating, and you can miss a good shot, if you don't have all that memorized. I imagine all cameras are like this, but thought I would mention it since we are discussing an out-of-the-box experience.
* The door to the sockets on the right-hand side comes open easily (does not lock closed but only snaps shut), which is a hassle at times. I am concerned that it will snap off one day.
* In my opinion, the flash is underpowered.
Overall, I am happy with the TZ5 and impressed with the pictures and video it produced - especially since I had so little experience with it. My friend, who is a film maker by trade, was also impressed with the camera. It is bigger than I would have liked, but the trade off for a 10X zoom was worth it for me.
Do get an extra battery - I went through both batteries in 4 hours of shooting, mostly stills but some video. Big hassle to run out of juice in the middle of your day. A SD Extreme III 8GB was recommended in some reviews and it worked well for me, especially with shooting video. In doing research about buying a camera, one of the most helpful websites I found was the "What Camera Should I Buy?" forum at the Digital Camera Resource Page - [...]
In looking at the reviews here on Amazon for the TZ5, be aware that they are organized by color, so check each color for information about this camera.

(More customer reviews)Before you get into this, please note that the 4 stars above should really be 3 and a half. I bought this camera as a replacement for my Casio Exilim EX-Z750, which was damaged by sand. I did a lot of research, and was almost set to buy the Canon SD870 IS, largely for the wide angle. However, while in the store, I saw the Lumix DMC-FS20, which had a more solid feeling than the Canon, and -to me- it also looked better.
There were only few reviews about the FS20 online (mainly good), and I had read good things about other Lumix models, so I ordered it. This camera is basically like the FS5, except for three things: the FS20 has a bigger LCD screen and a joystick-like control, instead of buttons; the FS5 has, among its accessories, an underwater case. The FS-20 is slightly bigger. The reason I went for the FS-20 was the joystick, with which I fell in love immediately.
The camera has a limited set of manual controls, which become even fewer if you choose the "intelligent" mode, so if you like being able to adjust most of your setting, this is not the camera for you. However, there are a few things one can set manually in the non-intelligent mode (and I discovered that I'd better use them), and quite a few scene modes (including one for sport). Not much can be done to the photos in the camera, but I use Paint Shop Pro, so I don' t mind.
Although I only had this camera for a few days (and not in a place where I can get great panoramic photos), I am, overall, pleased -but not delighted- with it:
What I like:
I am very impressed by the stabilizer. My previous camera did not have it and, boy, does it make a BIG difference!
Good close-ups: one can get really good, crisp photos at 5 cm. I took a pic of my shirt and, on zooming in, I could see all the threads, which was pretty neat. You get the fuzz on a peach, and all the details in a caterpillar (if you are so inclined).
In general, images are very crisp. I took a photo of a Word text on my laptop screen, and I could read it and see the pixels when zooming in on the camera screen. Did the same with a page from a paperback book, and it was perfectly readable and neat.
I took several photos of myself with the flash, and was pleasantly surprised by the absence of major red-eye -a rarity in these point-and-shoot models (I have brown eyes -maybe it is different with blue or green eyes).
There is the possibility of changing the exposure and also of "bracketing", which means that you can set the range of exposure you want the camera to try, and it takes three photos in a row, from which you can pick the best.
The image quality is reasonable - but has problems (see below)
I like the wide angle (although it is not as wide as in the Canon (30 mm here, vs. 28 mm in the Canon)). I only tried it on rather uninspiring landscapes, however.
The previously mentioned joystick is great to use.
The manual is on paper, which meant that I actually read it, and discovered things I would never have found out otherwise.
The software included with the camera includes a program to make panoramas and stitch together photos (the Canon has a similar feature). I was fairly impressed by it, because it actually stitched together a couple of sets of photos I had taken before, without having this in mind. Sometimes, however, the program picks photos that really do not match, so check your results....
It has face recognition (it even recognizes faces on TV).
It comes with a 4X optical zoom (most of the small models come with 3, although some have 5 or 7). It is not the fastest on the planet, although it has a button for fast complete extension.What I do not like:
It does not have a viewfinder (although I knew this upon buying it, of course). The LCD screen is nice in good light but, in sunlight, I really miss a viewfinder.
So far, most of the images I wanted to keep needed some retouching (so did most of those taken with my previous camera, however). The colors were at times dull (I used mostly standard colors), and the auto white balance does not always work properly (this was specified in the manual). It can be set manually, although you need to have something white at hand for that, and this improves things somewhat. Generally, indoor shots seemed under-exposed, but exposure can be adjusted.
When taking an indoor photo of a white piece of paper during the day, I noticed that the corners tend to be darker than the middle (also without flash), even if no shadow was visible to me. This, too, improves a little by fiddling with white balance and exposure. Outdoors this is much less of a problem.
The speed (or lack thereof) of the card when you connect the camera to your PC is a shortcoming. I generally dislike the photo viewers that come with cameras, and I tend to use the camera as an external drive. If you do this, don't even think of rotating a picture while you pretend that this is a USB drive, because your youth will be gone before the thing has rotated 90 degrees... Looking at the images is also painfully slow, and the software that comes with the camera only speeds things up a little, but it is slow to start. Fortunately, you can neatly delete multiple pics (even not in sequence) on the camera in few strokes, and I suggest you be selective before you connect to your PC.
Although viewing your photos on the 3-inch screen is great, that's a lot of real estate to leave your fingerprints on. The camera can hardly be handled without touching the screen, which occupies most of the back.
Battery life is about 270 photos (and I stressed the battery quite a bit by using flash and playback a lot). This is as promised, and the large LCD probably eats up a lot of energy. This is worse than my Casio, but better than other cameras with similar features - so not quite a negative.
Overall, I like this camera, but you should be prepared to retouch several of your images. Also, don't expect the whitest of whites if lighting is not optimal. The manual settings may be too few for those who like them and too many for those who don't (although one can just use the intelligent mode, even if that will not always be satisfactory).

Polaroid Optics 46mm CPL Circular Polarizer Filter Review

(More customer reviews)This filter works fine on my Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ35 (also fits FZ28).
It is not multicoated as more expensive polarizing filters.
I am not positive that it is truly CPL, but CPL is not necessary for this (or other non SLR digitals) camera anyway.
Maybe I have it wrong, but I thought a true CPL filter does not change contrast as it rotates.
This filter has a significant effect when manually rotated.
What I can say is that it works great and does what it is supposed to do.
It does not interfere with the lens cap as the other cheaper 46mm polarizer (Zeikos) because the mounting ring is thinner.
Other than that they are both about the same.
I would say the extra few bucks is worth it for the thinner ring.
It mounts fine.
Some people need to know that you have a split, slipping ring which needs to be held still when mounting on the camera, and that you must rotate the outer ring to get the best effect when taking a photo.

I was unable to locate one in the UK, even on the Amazon (UK) site but noted that it was available in the US, so I ordered it.
The service from Amazon was spot on, OK it took a bit longer to get my hands on it, but it was shipped the day I ordered it and arrived safe and sound.
As you would expect from Lowepro the bag is well made with just the right amount of storage for a modern camcorder, spare battery, memory cards etc. and very compact.

However, unless they received a different case than the one I did, the dimensions stated as 104x62x34mm- which are exactly right for my Panasonic Lumix ZS7- are only partly correct. Rather than the 104mm (4.09"), it is 118mm (4.65"), and rather than the magnetic clasp one reviewer noted, it is a rather stiff snap, which does not allow one to pull the flap tighter to make up for the extra space. (If you look at the picture, and see where you can see the camera in the gap on the side- with mine there was just a gap, it is that much too big- enough to put my index finger in comfortably.)
Tuff-Luv was very good in returning correspondence and allowing for return of the case, but I am rather confused about how they can offer a case that they do not actually carry- they even went to their stockroom to measure- and which one did other reviewers receive that it fit their Lumix cameras perfectly?
It is nice that they lowered the price $10 since I bought this, but beware of the dimensions. It may not be a problem for you, but space in my pocket is valuable to me.

(More customer reviews)I am rather picky when it comes to choosing a digital camera and even pickier when it comes to choosing a case to protect said camera. I want to protect my investment with a product that is reliable and readily provides superior protection for said investment. The BOXIE camera case is that product and my preferred choice for my Canon PowerShot SD400.
It comes with a dutiful zipper that encloses the hardened case for added protection that I found to be comprised of very sturdy materials. The zipper also doesn't jam easily and handles the grooves of the case with excellent precision. I was also rather impressed with the internal pouch that comes with the case. It is perfect for holding flash drives or additional memory cards for your camera.
The stated feature of the case is that it only open up to a 45 degree angle for the purpose of preventing your camera from accidently slipping out. This feature is exactly as the developer describes for that was one selling point that caught my attention. I'd really prefer to not have my camera slip out accidentally and this case provides the perfect feature for that preventative measure.
Also, the interior is a very soft material that will not scratch your camera in any way shape or form - even when removing the camera from the pouch! I have really enjoyed this feature as well.
I would strongly recommend the BOXIE camera case for your Digital Camera. It is highly reliable, quite affordable, and you will receive far more than you bargained for. Great buy!

(More customer reviews)The Casio SI-460 is loaded with many excellent (and easy to set up) customizable features, but there are a few features that are not customizable that one should be aware of, as they may be important to you:
1. It will not let you record different messages on different lines. This is especially important if you want to record a different message for your home and home office numbers or for different family members.
2. You can not choose the default outgoing line. For example, if you have different long distance services on different lines and want to call from your second number, you have to manually choose it by pressing the second number. This is an even bigger problem if you want to use the auto redial feature, as it will automatically dial from the first number. The only way around that is to put the first number on hold before you press the auto redial button.
3. If you are using the speakerphone on the Auto Attendant Unit (the unit chosen to answer calls and to run the voice mail system) and a call comes in, it will not ring on that Unit and the caller will hear a continuous recording saying "Hello. Thank you for calling. Your call will be answered shortly." Unless you see the light on the Unit light up or hear another extension, your caller will remain in limbo until you hang up the speakerphone.
4. You can not turn on the Auto Attendant, and hence the Voice Mail, remotely.

Casio Exilim ZR-10 Digital Camera (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this Casio camera because of its built in High Dynamic Range (HDR) capability. I wasn't disappointed. The HDR art feature was of less interest and once I tired it soon discounted it altogether.
Using simple auto mode the camera is quick and responsive. Using any other mode slows things up considerably while you wait for the camera to 'do' its thing for that particular mode. The results were ususlly worth the wait but waiting often meant you missed the next shot.
I returned the camera to Amazon, not because I was disappointed with it but because of its fiddly controls. At age 67 my fingers, already large, are less mobile and I found some of the buttons less than friendly. The on/off button is small and sometimes hard to find quickly. The mode buttons are larger but all buttons are flush mounted with the top of the case so less obvious where to put ones fingers especially in low lit places or at night.
Overall a fine camera with many desirable features. The pictures I did take were mostly very good it was just the controls that let you down. Also the zoom is too fast and often difficult to find the degree of zoom you want. Sometimes that meant I shot with a wider lens than needed simply because I couldn't stop it at the disired focal length.

(More customer reviews)I am buying my second to replace my first. This is no fault of the camera or manufacturer. I let it get soaked at a Universal Studios theme park ride. If I didn't try to use the camera to 'check it out' and let it dry out, I am sure all would still be fine. This was my second casio camera and I love the metal casing - feels solid. This thing takes fantastic HD videos (720p) - put a big SD card in there and you can take very long movies. The options and quality of still pictures is amazing, and I haven't even tried a fraction of the features. 14.1 megapixels is one of the highest resolutions for point-and-shoot cameras out there. In fact, I thought I might get a little upgrade when I replaced my damaged wet one, but didn't find that many options out there. I almost got the z800, but I think it is smaller and I didn't want it much smaller in size. Wasn't too jazzed about charging method at first (pulling out battery to charge), but I got used to it. Now I will have a spare battery to charge while other is in camera!
